Elementary: Lower El - March 2019

Updated: Apr 9, 2019

It's hard to believe it is already March and spring will soon be here. This means one very exciting thing for the Lower Elementary class: time to raise chicks!

The chicks will be in the classroom when we return from spring break. Every year, we raise two chicks in our classroom for three weeks before they are old enough to join our hens in the barn.

It was very nice to have parents come in again this year for Parent Week. Many parents were able to come in before and after school so their child could show them some of the lessons they have been working on.

The children will be keeping a chick journal to follow the growth and changes of one chick over the three-week period. Every morning, they will record the weight, write down any new observations, and draw what they look like. Fortunately, chicks grow very fast, so the children will see big changes every day.

The Third Grade students will take turns taking the chicks home at night to care for them. I will be sending out an email with information about scheduling these nights, and guidelines for the care of the chicks. Last month. we studied the lives of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and did a variety of activities. The walls in our hallway have pages of president research posted which have many interesting facts. The children also practice memorizing all of the presidents in order starting with Washington and ending with Trump. It is quite impressive to hear them recite all 45 presidents in order! It was very nice to have parents come in again this year for “Parent Week". Many parents were able to come in before and after school so their child could show them some of the lessons they have been working on. It was also nice to have them come in and observe the classroom during the morning work period.

The Third Grade students will be joining the Upper Elementary class to go cross country skiing on Wednesday, March 13th. This will be a fantastic day for all of them! The First and Second Graders will have some special activities on the same day in the afternoon at school. With melting snow on the way, please check in to see if your child needs any of their gloves, hats, or snow pants to be washed and dried out at home. Upcoming events: -March Spring Break, March 18-22 -April Museum of the Rockies Field Trip - Wednesday, April 3 Parent Teacher Conferences, - April 11 & 12

I hope you all have a wonderful month of March and spring break!
