Spanish Language Curriculum

The Spanish Language Curriculum is designed to provide children with a meaningful, engaging, and natural approach to learning Spanish, inspired by the fundamental principles of Montessori education. The program recognizes that children learn best through active exploration, purposeful experiences, repetition, and meaningful interactions within a carefully prepared environment. Rooted in Montessori philosophy, the curriculum follows each child’s developmental needs and individual pace of learning. Spanish is introduced as a living language through authentic communication, hands-on experiences, movement, songs, stories, practical life activities, and carefully prepared language materials. The curriculum emphasizes listening, comprehension, speaking, vocabulary development, and early literacy, allowing children to gradually build confidence and familiarity with the Spanish language.

​​Primary Program (Ages 3-6) 

​

Designed for children ages three to six, the Primary Spanish Program focuses on immersion and auditory learning to establish foundational language skills. Through a natural and stress-free approach, children are exposed to Spanish through authentic communication and meaningful daily interactions, including greetings, colors, numbers, and common classroom expressions. The curriculum centers on vocabulary development and language recognition, utilizing daily repetition, interactive songs, stories, movement, and playful activities. Children also engage with concrete materials in a Montessori-inspired environment, allowing them to physically manipulate materials, associate words with objects and concepts, and develop comprehension through meaningful sensory experiences.

Elementary and Middle School Program (Ages 7 - 14) 

​

The Elementary and Middle School Spanish Program consists of a comprehensive eight-level sequence aligned with ACTFL proficiency guidelines. The program progressively develops students’ ability to communicate effectively in Spanish while expanding their vocabulary, grammatical knowledge, cultural understanding, and confidence in using the language.

Introductory Stage: Levels 1 - 2

​

Levels 1 and 2 correspond to the introductory stage of language development. Students focus on foundational vocabulary, basic greetings, classroom communication, and simple present-tense phrases used in everyday interactions.

 

Key areas include:

​

• Alphabet and foundational vocabulary

• Pronouns and basic greetings

• Numbers, colors, and common expressions

• The verbs ser and estar

• Regular and common irregular present-tense verbs

• Noun-adjective agreement

• Introduction to the preterite and imperfect tenses

Intermediate Stage: Levels 3 - 4

​

Levels 3 and 4 progress into the Intermediate stage, where students develop the ability to form connected sentences, describe personal experiences, express opinions, and communicate in a wider variety of everyday situations, including travel and social interactions.

 

Key areas include:

​

• More complex sentence structures

• Introduction to different moods (verb changes) and their functions

• Indirect object pronouns

• Reflexive verbs

• The present subjunctive

• Future and conditional tenses

• Present and past perfect tenses

• Relative pronouns

Advanced Stage: Levels 5 - 6

​

During Levels 5 and 6, students enter the Advanced stage, developing the ability to narrate and describe across multiple timeframes, discuss abstract topics, express opinions, and participate in increasingly complex conversations and discussions.

 

Key areas include:

 

• The full subjunctive system, including hypothetical and adverbial clauses

• Compound tenses

• Passive voice constructions

• Complex sentence structures

• Advanced linking and transition strategies

• Formal communication and written expression

•  Discussion and debate of increasingly complex topics

Superior Proficiency: Levels 7 - 8

​

Levels 7 and 8 focus on refining students’ language proficiency and developing greater precision, fluency, and sophistication in communication. Students expand their vocabulary, strengthen their cultural understanding, and develop the skills necessary to communicate effectively in academic, professional, and other formal contexts.

 

The program emphasizes:

 

• Precise and sophisticated vocabulary

• Nuanced cultural understanding

• Advanced grammatical accuracy

• Formal and academic communication

• Professional language

• Advanced reading and writing

• Discussion, analysis, and debate

• Effective communication across a variety of social, academic, and professional contexts

 

Throughout all levels, the program maintains the Montessori emphasis on independence, purposeful learning, respect for the individual learner, and progression from concrete experiences toward abstract understanding. The ultimate goal is to help students develop not only proficiency in Spanish but also a lasting appreciation for the language and the diverse cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.
