PRIMARY PROGRAM
Rainbow and Mi Casita

The Montessori Primary Curriculum (ages three to six) is a unique three-year systematic program where each year’s activities are logical and consistent extensions of what has come before. We have two Montessori Primary classrooms: Mi Casita and Rainbow.

The Core Curriculum Areas

  • Language: Children enthusiastically travel the road from beginning vocabulary to reading and writing with an emphasis on phonics and the fundamentals of language.

  • Math: Math lessons utilize colorful, hands-on materials that isolate each concept from concrete fundamentals to abstract reasoning.

  • Sensorial: Children explore their environment through lessons that develop and refine all their senses. These lessons help them to order and classify their sensory impressions of the physical world. Each sensorial lesson isolates one quality such as size, volume, width, length, touch, temperature, weight, color, shape, or sound. The sensorial curriculum provides the early foundation for subjects such as botany, geography, geometry, and music.

  • Practical Life: Children delight in exercises in daily living such as polishing silver, pouring tea, and preparing food. These activities help them gain control and coordination through movement and contribute to their positive self image as they gain independence through mastery of real life skills.

Expanded Curriculum Areas

  • Physical Geography: The large wood puzzle maps provide the basis for our study of geography in the preschool classroom. At first, the children use the maps simply as puzzles. Gradually, they learn the names of many of the countries as well as information about climate and products. The maps illustrate many geographical facts concretely. Children also learn the common land formations including islands and peninsulas by making them.

  • Cultural Studies: The children gain an awareness of the world around them by exploring the customs, food, music, climate, language, and animals of other countries. This helps to raise their consciousness of other people while gaining an understanding, tolerance, and compassion for the people of the world.

  • History: As an introduction to the concept of history, the children begin by making a timeline of their own lives that begins with their baby pictures.

  • Science and Nature: In science, the children's natural curiosity is stimulated through discovery projects and experiments that help the children draw their own conclusions. The plant and animal kingdoms are studied in an orderly fashion to foster a love and appreciation for all living things.

  • Arts and Crafts: Children explore various mediums and art concepts with an emphasis on fun and individual ideas. Regular involvement in a large variety of arts and crafts develops the children's aesthetic sense and creative talents.

  • Gardening: Children plant, cultivate, and harvest vegetables and flowers from early spring until fall in our bountiful outdoor gardens. While indoors, children learn to care for plants and see how they grow.

  • Spanish: Children learn basic vocabulary, grammar, and conversation in a child-friendly, playful way that incorporates games and music. Children strengthen their understanding and fluency by using puppets, flash cards, and movement while having a lot of fun!
